About

This episode will be a wonderful opportunity to explore improvisation and spontaneity with our audience, turning the traditional chamber concert set-up completely on its head. The iyatra Quartet will fill the garden with their boundary-bending, virtuosic music that fuses classical roots with innovation, intense energy and groove, and stretches the capabilities of their instruments with a heady mix of world-sounds and extended techniques.

An ensemble of cello, clarinet, percussion and violin, the iyatra Qaurtet have backgrounds in classical, jazz, Cuban, Brazilian and Indian music. Their name is derived from the Hindi for travel, and that’s certainly what their music does,

combining Indian raga with drum and bass rhythms, plainchant with extended percussion techniques and many more influences to create a unique sound and collection of musical experiences.

Their debut album (This World Alone) was praised by violinist Nigel Kennedy as ‘beautiful … full of space and truth’. In 2019, iyatraQuartet were recipients of the inaugural Kennedy-Kolodziejski Award.
